How to Check a Contractor’s License in Alabama

Alabama contractor license guide: distinguish the Home Builders Licensure Board from the General Contractors Board, check the right threshold, and protect your remodeling estimate.

For an Alabama home repair or remodel, ask which state credential applies to the job before asking whether a contractor is “licensed.” Alabama separates residential home builders from general contractors, and the distinction affects the record you need to check.

The residential threshold is the first filter

Alabama’s Home Builders Licensure Board says a person who builds, remodels, repairs, improves, or reimproves a residential structure for more than $10,000 generally falls within its licensing law, unless an exception or other jurisdiction applies. Ask for the whole undertaking’s price, including labor and materials. A project divided into separate documents can still be connected work, so do not let a divided estimate substitute for a clear explanation of the scope.

Commercial or public work is a separate path. Alabama’s General Contractors Board describes its scope as commercial or public projects of $100,000 or more, and swimming pools of $5,000 or more. That credential should not be used as a stand-in for a residential Home Builders license.

Check the card and the contract side by side

For a remodel or roof replacement, ask for the home builder license number and card. Search the exact number on the Home Builders Licensure Board lookup. Compare the result with the legal business named in the estimate, contract, invoice, and payment instructions. The board advises homeowners to verify before signing a residential contract over $10,000.

If the online result is missing, contact the board. It says records still being processed may not appear yet. A municipal business license is not automatically the same as the state residential home builder credential. Ask the board to confirm the contractor’s status and the scope the license covers.

A roof estimate has to say what “replacement” includes

Ask whether the price covers tear-off, disposal, underlayment, flashing, ventilation, decking allowance, protection of landscaping, and cleanup. If the crew discovers damaged decking, the estimate should explain how the condition will be documented and priced. If the contractor recommends moving wiring or rebuilding a section of the home, ask who performs that added trade work and which credential applies.

Call the city or county building department for the property address to ask about permits and inspections. The estimate should identify who applies and who meets the inspector. Check insurance independently. A state license does not tell you whether a policy is current or covers the work proposed.

Try this: “Please give me the Home Builders license number and the legal company name on the contract. Put the permit responsibility, exclusions, and how we approve extra decking in the estimate.”

Compare the same written scope from each bidder, and save the credential result, insurance, contract, permit record, inspections, and receipts together.
