How to Hire a Contractor Without Losing Control of Contact
Choose who can contact you, set expectations before sharing a project request, and use a short hiring brief and first-call script that keeps the decision in your hands.

One project request should not take the decision out of your hands. Before you submit your details anywhere, check what happens next: who can see the request, how many professionals may respond, and whether contact starts only after you message someone.
Choose the contact path that fits you
You can browse professional profiles and contact a business directly, or use a request flow that sends your details to one or more businesses. Those are different choices. A platform may offer more than one path, and the process can vary by service, location, and the screen you use.
For example, Angi currently describes instant booking, upfront pricing, and quote requests on its main homeowner page. Its HomeAdvisor matching page says a request may be matched with up to four pros and that matched pros may contact the homeowner. Thumbtack's current home page says there are no calls or texts until you message a pro. Its privacy policy also explains that in some cases project requests may be provided to selected professionals. Read the specific request screen before you submit, because a platform's services and matching options can change.
On SheFix, you can browse and contact a professional yourself, ask SheFix for a suitable list, or ask SheFix to contact up to three professionals for you. Homeowner use is free, and no account is required to request help. You choose the path that fits the project.
Copy this one-request brief
Use the same details with every professional you choose to compare. Leave out information that is not needed to assess the work.
- Project and desired result:
- Property city and ZIP code:
- Rooms or areas involved:
- What you have observed and when it happens:
- Photos or measurements available:
- Timing needs and access limits:
- Work you want assessed:
- Contact preference: call, text, or email:
- Times when contact is welcome:
- Number of professionals you want to hear from:
- Questions you want answered before scheduling:
Do not include alarm codes, payment card details, identity documents, or a schedule that tells strangers when you will be away.
Set the boundary before contact begins
A short note can prevent misunderstandings. Send this with your brief:
> Please contact me by [method] between [times]. I am comparing written scopes for [project]. Do not schedule a visit, share my request with another business, or begin work without my approval. Before we set a visit, please tell me who will arrive, the assessment fee, and what information you need from me.
Adjust the wording to match the platform's actual process. If a request screen says details will be shared with a group of providers, assume each listed recipient may contact you unless it clearly says otherwise.
Use this first-call script
> Thanks for reaching out. Before I schedule, please confirm your business name, who would come to the home, whether there is a diagnostic or visit fee, and what the visit includes. I am not approving work on this call. I will review a written scope and follow up by [time or method].
If the caller asks for a deposit, same-day approval, or access you did not discuss, pause. Ask for the request in writing and compare it with your brief. You can end a conversation without agreeing to a visit.
What to check before you submit
Look for plain answers to four questions: who receives your project details, who can contact you, whether you can choose a professional first, and how to stop or redirect follow-up. Save a screenshot of the request summary and the confirmation message. If the answers are missing, contact the platform before sending the request.
Keep the next step yours
Compare the written scope, timing, exclusions, and payment terms. A profile or introduction does not confirm availability, licensing, insurance, or suitability for your particular job. Verify what applies to your property and ask for details before opening the door or approving work.
